The leading research question of this dissertation is: In the context of preventive healthcare, how do patients, professionals and organization representatives deal with the risks of incongruent perspectives and domination by powerful actors when tasked with collaborative decision-making? This dissertation builds on a dataset containing data from three different case studies on different types of collaborative decision-making in preventive healthcare in the context of The Netherlands. Three case studies were conducted through a triangulation of qualitative methods, including: incident analysis through retrospective, semi-structured interviews, focused ethnography through participant observation, reflective interviews and document analysis, and a process reconstruction using retrospective semi-structured interviews and document analysis. Each case was then scrutinized in line with a narrative and power-sensitive analysis, which helped to gain rich insights into the intricacies of how actors deal with the two aforementioned central risks of collaborative decision-making processes. The data is all qualitative data, based on interviews, observations and document analysis. Narrative and ethnographic methods were used to analyze and interpret the data. The data interpretations are member checked with the participants of the study.
